Rvcdf awards $250,000 in covid-19 small business relief grants

Rainier Valley Community Development Fund (RVCDF)—in partnership with JPMorgan Chase—has awarded $250,000 in COVID-19 grants to 57 southeast Seattle small businesses to address the immediate economic challenges resulting from the COVID-19 global pandemic.

We received 166 applications from small businesses throughout Seattle. The award criteria included: location in southeast Seattle (east of I-5, south of I-90), minority-owned, and family income of business owner(s) that falls within the limits for the Area Median Income (AMI) established by HUD. Our intention was to spread these grant funds across those three criteria as evenly as possibly. Of the 57 grants awarded, 43 recipients were low-income business owners within the HUD guidelines. Of the awards were granted, 67% of the funds were given to African/Americans, 19% to Asian Pacific Islanders, and 11% to Latina.

“The grant will go a long way towards us continuing to support our community through staying active,” says awardee Alicia Haskins, Director of Rainier Health & Fitness. “Can’t stop, won’t stop!” Grant funds may be used to cover rent and utilities, supplies and inventory, business planning and consulting and working capital.

“Thanks to the generous support and partnership of JPMorgan Chase we were able to grant financial assistance to 57 small businesses here in our community. Partnerships such as this can provide a much-needed lifeline to help small businesses weather this crisis,” says Bob Luciano, RVCDF’s Director of Community Development.
